9 Vata Rejuvenating Practices for Fall

Updated: Oct 17

Greetings to the season of refreshing air, golden foliage, and changing energies. As autumn reveals its colorful shades, it's crucial to synchronize with the natural rhythms. Vata, representing air and ether elements, often becomes heightened in the autumn, which may result in imbalances. However, fret not, as there are revitalizing techniques grounded in Ayurveda that can aid in reestablishing dosha balance and energy in this period. Let's explore nine impactful methods to balance your physical and mental well-being this autumn.

1. Embrace Warming Foods

While the weather turns colder, your diet can play a crucial role in balancing Vata. Opt for nourishing, warm, and grounding foods like hearty soups, stews, cooked grains, kitchari, and root vegetables. Incorporate spices like ginger, cinnamon, cumin, and turmeric to ignite your digestive fire (agni) and pacify Vata's cold nature.

2. Hydrate with Herbal Teas

Stay hydrated and cozy by sipping on soothing herbal teas throughout the day. Choose Vata-balancing herbs such as tulsi and chamomile and tulsi to calm your nervous system and promote inner tranquility. Warm teas are not only hydrating but also serve as a comforting and grounding ritual during the fall season.

3. Cultivate a Daily and Evening Ayurveda Routine

Establishing daily self-care with morning and evening Ayurveda routines which can anchor you amidst seasonal transitions. Practice gentle yog-asana, meditation, or pranayama (breathwork) to ground yourself and cultivate an environment of inner peace. A consistent routine can help stabilize Vata's inherent qualities of movement and variability, fostering a sense of stability and calm.

4. Enjoy Abhyanga (Self-Massage)

Nourish your skin and soothe your senses with the practice of Abhyanga, or self-massage using warm oils. This Ayurvedic practice not only hydrates the skin, promotes lymphatic movement, but also relaxes the nervous system, promoting overall well-being.

5. Prioritize Adequate Rest

As the days grow shorter, honor your body's need for rest and rejuvenation. Aim for early nights and sufficient sleep to replenish your energy reserves. Create a cozy bedtime routine, dimming the lights, and disconnecting from screens to signal your body that it's time to unwind and embrace restful sleep.

"Sometimes our nervous systems are tired, even exhausted and that makes it difficult to relax and to fall and stay asleep. We need to nourish ourselves at the deepest level with subtle body practices such as 31 point blue star."

-Veena, Saumya Ayurveda

As you go about your active and often high speed day, it's necessary to downshift into neutral gear. Consistently added, as part of your evening routine, the 31 point blue star practice will relax, rejuvenate, and prepare you for restorative sleep.

6. Connect with Nature

Immerse yourself in the beauty of fall foliage and the earth's grounding energy by spending time in nature. Take leisurely walks in parks, forests, or gardens to tune into the season's transformative energy. Connecting with nature can help realign your own rhythms with the natural world, fostering dosha balance.

7. Practice Gratitude and Reflection

Embrace the essence of fall by cultivating gratitude and reflection in your daily life. Journal about the blessings in your life, moments of joy, and lessons learned. Expressing gratitude can shift your perspective, fostering positivity and resilience, even during challenging times. Cultivating inner stillness supports emotional wellbeing and emotional detoxification.

8. Rest Your Nervous System and Mind

Excessive thinking, media, social media, are overstimulating--even when it's good "news." When times are intense and destabilized, these can quickly fry the nervous system circuitry. The world of algorithms are not going to provide a break, so take one, often! Live in the here and you'll increase your peace of mind and conserve your precious energy. Would you prefer a quite walk in the woods over more screen stimulation?

9. Reduce Travel

Minimize stress by reducing travel. Travel, even when it's fun, is inherently Vata aggravating and more movement (travel) during Vata season can add up to increased Vata. Unfamiliar situations and unpredictable circumstances can increase anxiety and fear.

As we journey through the autumn season, remember that aligning with Ayurveda's wisdom can be a powerful source of rejuvenation and balance. By incorporating these Vata-rejuvenating practices into your daily life, you can nurture your mind, body, and spirit, and embrace the transformative energies of fall with grace and vitality.

“Veena has been great. I suffered with burning mouth syndrome for many years. Doctors and dentists had no idea what I was even talking about, much less solutions. Veena knew immediately. Within in a few weeks of using the herbs and protocols she recommended, I am not experiencing any of the symptoms I did previously.  And, my thinking is clearer, I am nearly free from hot flashes, and I feel more like myself.

Everything has been easy to incorporate into my life, which is the best part. This feels sustainable. I highly recommend working with Veena.” – Liz Pfeffer, Albuquerque, New Mexico

“Veena is an ideal Ayurvedic practitioner. With just a few clues she can source a medical issue, to which she then suggests logical, natural remedies. I am enjoying working with her. She is a storehouse of information and suggestions.

What she says teaches one how to "self" heal. I am fortunate to find her at this time in my life! Thank you, Veena, for your healing ways." - Maryon Maas, California
