Understanding Ayurveda
Ayurveda comes from the Sanskrit words "Ayur," which means life, and "Veda," meaning knowledge. This holistic system emphasizes how the body, mind, and environment are interconnected. Its goal is to maintain harmony among three vital energies or doshas: Vata (air), Pitta (fire), and Kapha (water). Understanding your dog's dosha can help you tailor their diet and care to meet their unique needs.

Assessing Your Dog’s Dosha
To effectively apply Ayurvedic principles, start by determining your dog's dosha. Here’s a breakdown to help you identify their predominant energy:
This is my guy Vata. He showed up on my back door one snowy winter morning. It was love at first sight. He was incredibly timid, hand shy, anxious and underweight.
Vata Type 🐾
Physical Characteristics: Lean, agile, often with a dry coat.
Behavior: Energetic, playful, but may experience anxiety or fear.
Vata Imbalances: Peruse our Wild List of Vata Imbalances.
Dogs with a Vata Constitution are characterized by high energy levels and alertness. Vata is described as the wind and so these pups are all about movement and out of balance, excess movement. They require daily exercise, mental stimulation, and playtime. These dogs are prone to anxiety and sensitivity to both energetic and sensory. They have a tendency to sprint, may get tired quickly despite having plenty of energy. They may be finicky and light eaters. Typically, they have a tall or slender build (just like their human counterparts) and may exhibit irregular features in their face, feet, and tail. Some examples of Vata dogs include Greyhounds, Dalmatians, Poodles, Herding breeds, and certain Terrier breeds. Picture a Jack Russel or a Border Collie and you've got it!
Ayurveda helps us identify the dosha that requires attention. For instance, Vata dosha is characterized by dry, light, and mobile attributes. When a dog's Vata is balanced, they exhibit activity, energy, and sociability. An imbalance in Vata may manifest as anxiety, fear, overly sensitive senses, hyperactivity, decreased appetite, weight loss, constipation, or arthritis issues. If your dog is timid, insecure, afraid of sounds, people and other stimuli, or restless, Vata is likely imbalanced.
For Vata dogs, opt for a diet that includes warm, nourishing foods such as cooked sweet potatoes and oatmeal to help calm their system.
Meet Emmylou who I adopted at age five. She had severe IBS and refused food. She's now almost ten, her intestinal issues quickly resolved and her bowel movements are like clockwork. She's bold, charismatic, stubborn, and funny. A true Pitta.
Pitta Type 🐾
Physical Characteristics: Medium build, warm coat, and muscular.
Behavior: Confident, intelligent, but may show irritability or aggression.
Pitta Imbalances: Review our Hot List of Common Pitta Imbalances
Pitta Constitution dogs are the protectors and intelligent. Due to their smarts and warrior like ways, they may be territorial and aggressive. Pitta dogs, like their human counterparts, are natural athletes with well defined ands often striking features. They thrive in agility training and canine competitions. They can make excellent services dogs. Some examples of Pitta dogs include: Alaskan Malamute, Labrador Retriever, Boxer, German Shepherd, Doberman, Giant Schnauzer, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherd, and Rottweiler.
When Pitta dosha is in balance, a dog appears focused, purposeful, driven, in need of challenge, active, and attentive. Excessive Pitta may manifest as skin issues like rashes, digestive problems such as insatiable appetite, diarrhea, and inflammation, aggression, overly assertive, jealousy, and intensity
Offer Pitta dogs cooling fruits in moderation as a treat. Emmylou enjoys eating fresh pears and apples from the tree during summer to cool down. She also loves bananas all year long. According to Ayurveda, cucumbers are cooling, and they are another favorite of Emmylou. Here's a useful list from the American Kennel Club of produce that dogs can and cannot eat.
This is Vata's brother, Kapha. He showed up at the back door with Vata. He is calm, steady, even, strong, sweet, protective, trusting, and HUNGRY. There was not enough food for this fella.
Kapha Type 🐾
Physical Characteristics: Stocky, thick coat, and solid bone structure.
Behavior: Calm, loving, but can be lazy or stubborn.
Kapha Imbalances: Visit our Sturdy List of Kapha Imbalances.
Kapha Constitution dogs are the snugglers. Like Kapha humans, they are loyal and bonded. They are slow, steady, sweet strong, and stubborn. They enjoy hanging around and are natural vacuums for food crumbs. Due to their attachment, they may experience separation anxiety and gain excess weight. For the right job, they are excellent working dogs. Some Kapha breed examples: Newfoundland, St. Bernard, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Leonberger, Bassett Hound, Appenzeller Sennenhund, Entlebucher Mountain Dog, and Bloodhound, , and Bernese Mountain Dogs.
Kapha dosha presents as stable, sweet, steady and solid. A well-balanced Kapha dog is robust, dependable, and shows remarkable endurance. When Kapha is excessive, it can result in inertia, sluggishness, excessive eating, and possessiveness. A dog that appears withdrawn, overweight, or resistant to change may be experiencing an imbalance in Kapha.
Kapha dogs benefit from lighter foods which help keep them active and engaged. Here's a useful list from the American Kennel Club of produce that dogs can and cannot eat.
Recognizing Signs of Imbalance and Balancing Your Dog's Doshas
Vata 🦴
When it comes to balancing Vata dosha in your dog, consistency is key. Establishing a routine that prioritizes stability and peace can greatly benefit your furry friend. Consider creating a daily schedule that includes regular exercise, gentle massages (accompanied by deep audible breathing), and thorough brushing sessions.
For Vata imbalanced dogs, nourishing foods play a crucial role. Opt for warm and moist options such as grains (if there are no allergies present), goat milk, and root vegetables to support your dog's well-being. Additionally, incorporating scents like lavender, chamomile, and cedar can help promote grounding and balance in a subtle manner. Remember to apply these scents very lightly and avoid direct contact with your dog's fur or skin to prevent any potential irritation.
By focusing on these practices and incorporating them into your dog's daily routine, you can effectively address Vata imbalances and promote a sense of harmony and well-being in your canine companion.
Pitta 🦴
Pitta dogs, known for their preference for cooling foods and environments to regulate their heat, require specific care during hot seasons. Providing them with a designated cool resting spot is essential to ensure their comfort and well-being. It is advisable to avoid exposing Pitta dogs to intense situations or overstimulation as they thrive in a calm environment. Many Pittas enjoy activities near water or a good swim, which can help them stay cool and relaxed.
When engaging in playtime with Pitta dogs, opting for mentally stimulating activities like agility, games, or fetch instead of roughhousing is beneficial for their temperament. Light scents such as rose, mint, sandalwood, and lemongrass can aid in restoring balance for a Pitta-imbalanced pup. Regular meditation sessions, particularly with their owners, can help Pitta dogs maintain emotional equilibrium.
Introducing cooling foods like cucumber and apple in modest amounts into their diet and fish oil can contribute to their overall health. It is recommended to add one teaspoon of coconut oil per 10 pounds of dog to their diet and consider applying it topically for additional benefits. By following these guidelines, Pitta pups can lead a balanced and healthy lifestyle tailored to their specific needs.
Here's what the AKC has to say about fish oils and your dog's health.
Kapha 🦴
Kapha dogs require invigoration. When Kapha is imbalanced, your pal may be depressed and withdraw. As pack leader, it's your job to encourage physical activity and maintain a consistent routine of stimulating play and exercise. Incorporating high contrast patterns into their surroundings, such as bedding and collars, can help lift their spirits and keep their minds engaged.
When it comes to using food as medicine, it is recommended to opt for lighter options that promote digestion and support Kapha's sluggish agni (digestive fire) and metabolism. Including pureed leafy green vegetables and a touch of finely chopped ginger can aid in stimulating their metabolism. It is advisable to steer clear of heavy, fatty, processed foods and treats, as your Kapha canine is prone to weight gain and sluggish metabolism.
Overall, maintaining an invigorating physical activity, a light dry, and nourishing diet, and sensory stimulation can help Kapha canines stay healthy, active, and content in their daily lives.
Implementing Ayurveda for Your Dog
Identifying your dog's dosha sets the stage for integrating Ayurveda into their care. Here are some practical steps you can take:
Balanced Diet
Food is essential for maintaining balance in Ayurveda. Here’s how to choose a diet based on your dog’s dosha:
For Vata: Warm, moist foods such as cooked carrots. Avoid raw veggies and cold meals, and dry kibble as these can exacerbate Vata imbalances.
For Pitta: Cooling options like zucchini and cucumber can help balance Pitta dosha.
For Kapha: Provide dry, stimulating options like brown rice and fresh greens. Avoid heavy diets full of fatty meats that can lead to lethargy.
Always consult your veterinarian before making any changes.
Ayurvedic Herbs To Support Your Dog
Herbs play an important role in Ayurvedic practices. Always consult a veterinarian before adding any herbs to your dog's diet. More and more pet owners are seeking a holistic approach to caring for their beloved animals' health.

Daily and Seasonal Routines
Establishing consistent daily routines is crucial for maintaining balance according to Ayurveda. Pets thrive and are reassured by a consistent rhythm to their day...as so are their humans. While routine is important and soothing to all dogs, it's essential for Vata type dogs. Animals are naturally aligned with the seasonal (rituchaya) and daily (dinacharya) rhythm of life, so follow their lead, grab the lead and enjoy frequent walks.
While you need to be pack leader to have a secure and respectful dog, you can learn to align with nature by observing your dog. For example, Emmylou will begin to blow her coat about three weeks before the hot summer temperatures transition to autumn's cool temperature and this clues me in to up her cooling food options. Consider these aspects:
Regular Feeding Times: Feed your dog at the same times each day to stabilize digestion, energy (prana) levels, and it makes for timely bowel movements. Just as your appetite changes from season to season, so does your dogs. Whatever season your dog is more active in, their appetite will be stronger. Adjust their food accordingly. Exercise: Tailor physical activity to your dog's energy level. A 30-minute walk or play session can significantly improve their mood and health. Each dog has different exercise needs based on their dosha, the season, and their stage of life. For example, Emmylou becomes irritable and snappy if her Pitta energy is not burned off with consistent, challenging hikes, whereas elder dog Jazz rests and sleep much of the time and benefits from short walks.
Rest: Ensure they have a quiet, comfortable place to nap. Adequate rest is vital for regeneration and overall health. For example, now that Jazz has surpassed his life expectancy, his routines are adjusted to be aligned with his Vata stage of life. He needs more sleep, rest and shorter, easier hikes. What he needs most, is to be near his pack, which is comforting to him. When summer temperatures hit triple digit, the brothers Vata and Kapha, will meander around in the early morning and finish their adventures by 7a.m. Then, they hang out in the shade and resume their activity when the temperatures cool off in the evening. They are aligned with the doshic rhythm of the day.

Mindfulness and Training
Similar to humans, dogs can also experience mental well-being. Participate in positive reinforcement training sessions tailored to your dog's specific needs, taking into consideration their predominant dosha. This will enhance your bond and provide your dog with a sense of security.
Give Your Dog Fresh Water Daily in a Clean Bowl
It seems simple, but I remember a client who visited a friend's house. The friend never cleaned the dog's water bowl, and the clever dog refused to drink from the dirty bowl. The Saumya client washed the bowl, filled it with fresh water, and, much to the dog's relief, it drank immediately.
Do Guided Relaxations and Meditations Together
We have an influence on another, people to people, and inter-species. Want a calm, balanced, happy pooch? Meditate. Use our daily guided meditations. In time, as you sit daily at the same times each day, you may find, when you open your eyes, your furry friends have joined you.
Learn Diaphragmatic Breathing and Change Your Life When you breathe diaphragmatically, you shift yourself from flight-fight-freeze to rest-restore-relax mode. This is the way you were designed to breathe from birth but stress and life shifts the breathing higher into the chest and creates a shallow breathing habit. When you relearn to breathe correctly, your state of inner calm radiates out to those around you.
Give Your Dog Fresh Food
Dogs need high quality, high prana food and water just like you do. Most dry kibble is lacking. Read ingredients and consult your veterinarian.
