Updated: 7 days ago

The holiday season can be a magical time filled with joy, gifts, and gatherings. However, it's also a period that can lead to neglecting our self-care routines. This year, let Saumya Ayurveda be your guide to maintaining wellness amid the holiday hustle. With practices rooted in this ancient system, you can embrace the season while prioritizing balance and health.

In the sections that follow, we’ll dive into specific Ayurvedic self-care practices that you can easily integrate into your holiday routine. Each tip is crafted to help you stay grounded and ensure that you maintain your self-care regimen throughout this festive time.

1. Embrace the Doshas

To effectively apply Ayurvedic wisdom, it’s essential to recognize your unique dosha, or body constitution. Ayurveda identifies three primary doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

  • Vata individuals often feel creative and energetic, but during stressful times, they may experience anxiety and overwhelm. For example, if you're a Vata, consider seeking out calming activities like gentle yog-asana or meditative walks to ease your mind.

  • Pitta types are ambitious and often strive for achievement. However, during the season, they can become irritable due to stress from schedules. Gentle exercises like swimming, brisk walk outdoors, or dosha balancing yog-asana will maintain their cool.

  • Kapha individuals seek comfort and calm but may become sluggish and depressed amidst holiday excess. They can benefit from more invigorating activities like dancing or hill walking to boost their energy and metabolism.

By aligning your holiday activities with your dosha, you can foster balance, harmony, and a sense of ease.

2. Mindful Eating Choices

The holidays are synonymous with an array of tempting treats. However, incorporating mindful eating can amplify your enjoyment while keeping your wellness in check.

Focus on whole, seasonal foods that resonate with your dosha. For instance, if you are Vata, enjoy warm, nourishing soups. For Pitta, cooked greens can help balance heat. And if you are Kapha, opt for light, dry, spicy easily digestible meals that avoid heaviness.

Pay close attention to your body and mind. Regularly check in to see if you are truly hungry. Research shows that practicing mindful eating can reduce overall calorie consumption by about 30%. Taking a moment of gratitude before each meal can deepen your appreciation of the food you consume.

Reduce ama (toxins) and balance your agni (digestive fire) by eating according to your dosha.

3. Daily Rituals: Abhyanga (Self-Massage)

Incorporating Abhyanga, or self-massage, into your daily Ayurveda routine can be a delightful way to unwind during the holidays.

Use warm, organic oils suitable for your dosha—sesame for Vata, brahmi for Pitta, and mustard for Kapha. By spending time massaging the oil into your skin, you increase circulation and deeply relax. Studies suggest that regular self-massage can reduce cortisol levels by up to 25%, promoting better stress management.

4. Hydration with Herbal Teas and Spiced Milks

Staying hydrated is essential, particularly during the festive season filled with indulgent foods. Instead of sugary drinks, opt for herbal teas that support Ayurvedic principles especially your doshas and agni (digestive fire).

Ginger tea can enhance digestion and provide warmth. Peppermint tea is refreshing and soothing for the digestive system. It’s estimated that drinking herbal teas can improve hydration levels by as much as 20%.

Keep a thermos of your favorite and dosha balancing herbal tea close at hand. It’s a gentle reminder to stay hydrated and enjoy comforting flavors.

Feeling overwhelmed and overstimulated? Any time is the right time for a warm mug of spiced milk to ground Vata and relax.

5. Meditation and Mindfulness

Finding time for meditation is vital amid the holiday chaos. Even dedicating just 11 minutes daily guided practice can significantly impact your mental well-being. Ground and calm throughout the day with our free two-minute meditation technique. This practice you can do sitting or while on the go.

6. Nature Walks

Maintaining your connection with nature is a core principle of Ayurveda. Set aside time for nature walks during the holiday season to unplug and rejuvenate. Walking after meals boosts metabolism, supports healthy digestion and elimination.

Whether it's a brisk evening walk or a gentle hike, being outdoors helps you reconnect with the earth. Even a 30-minute walk can elevate your mood and lower stress levels significantly. Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature, which can foster mental clarity.

7. Herbs and Supplements

Consider incorporating Ayurvedic herbs and supplements into your holiday wellness arsenal.

  • Ashwagandha is well-known for its stress-reducing properties. Research shows it can lower cortisol levels, improving your ability to cope with pressures.

  • Triphala supports digestion and can help maintain gut health, particularly after heavy meals.

Always consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner or herbalist to find the right supplements for your needs, ensuring they complement your self-care routine.

Important note: Saumya Ayurveda advises against using herbs in the same way as over-the-counter or prescribed pharmaceuticals. As a knowledgeable Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner, we will design a personalized herbal formula, specific nasya treatment, and customized Ayurvedic regimen based on your unique doshic profile.

Simply being from India does not make herbs Ayurvedic, nor does the label "organic" guarantee suitability for you. Herbs are considered Ayurvedic when integrated into your personalized Ayurvedic plan, carefully crafted to address your constitution and dosha imbalances. An herb that may be beneficial for one individual's condition could have adverse effects on another.

8. Soothe Your Senses

The holiday season brings various emotions, and nurturing your senses can create a calming atmosphere. Enhance your home with sensory experiences:

  • Sight: Use natural decorations like pinecones or candles to enchant your space.

  • Sound: Create a calming playlist that lifts your spirits and soothes your mind.

  • Touch: Cozy blankets and soft pillows can provide tactile comfort.

  • Smell: Scents from essential oils like lavender or sandalwood can promote relaxation.

  • Motion: Your feet are a way you experience the world. Give them a little love, and the whole you will benefit. Ayurvedic Foot Massage: Gain a Foothold On Your Health.

These small adjustments can significantly beautify your environment and uplift your mood.

9. Balanced Sleep Patterns

During the holidays, maintaining a regular sleep schedule often becomes difficult and things go down hill from there. Ayurveda emphasizes that quality sleep is vital for overall health.

Try to stick to a consistent sleep schedule as much as possible. Create a calming pre-bedtime routine that minimizes screen time. Consuming calming beverages like warm milk or chamomile tea prior to bed can enhance relaxation, leading to a more restful sleep.

A quiet, dark, cooler sleeping environment can make all the difference. Aim for at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep to restore your energy levels.

It's ok not to follow your full evening routine when you're traveling and hosting during the holidays. Select one to three practices that help you the most such as nasya, diaphragmatic breathing, and honoring your sleep schedule.

10. Gratitude Practices

Integrating gratitude into your holiday routine can boost your overall well-being. Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of positive emotions for a balanced dosha.

Each day, take time to jot down or express what you are grateful for. This small shift in focus can significantly improve your mood and reduce stress. Sharing your gratitude not only strengthens your relationships but also fosters a sense of community during the holidays.

Holistic Self-Care for a Joyful Season

The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and connection. However, stress can quickly overwhelm and then Vata and Pitta go out of balance without Ayurveda self-care practices. By integrating these Ayurvedic strategies into your holiday routine, you can create a harmonious balance that supports your overall well-being.

"It's ok for everything not to look the same during the holidays. You'll get back your full Ayurveda routine on January 2nd. In the meantime, keep a few of your most important Ayurveda tools with you, and you'll enjoy yourself during this time of year. Nasya, our free guided practices, and breathing diaphragmatically--we always have this trinity of self-care with us wherever we go."

“It is with great pleasure that I write this review! Working with Veena has remarkably changed my life – even in the places I was unaware that it demanded to be changed! Throughout the course of four months, Veena’s gentle and succinct approach allowed me to easily refine my routines into a more structured foundation that left me feeling more in graceful governance with myself – emotionally and physically.

Not only had she brought forth awareness in how I prepare/ relate to the food I eat, but she also prescribed me wonderful herbs to help calm my anxiety, detox my liver, and heal the ugly night sweats I’ve been experiencing due to hormonal imbalances. Lastly, her guided meditations are a great grounding force, and I have since continued to explore the euphoric benefits of Yoga Nidra.
