Understanding Ayurveda and Its Approach to Health

Ayurveda has been practiced for over 5,000 years and is built on the understanding that health is a balance between body, mind, and spirit. This system emphasizes personalized treatment and recognizes the significant role of diet, herbs, and lifestyle in maintaining health physically and mentally, by balancing the doshas.

In Ayurveda, the digestive system is called "Agni," which translates to digestive fire. A strong Agni typically leads to good health, while a weak or overly strong Agni may cause discomfort and diseases. Waste elimination, particularly through stool, is viewed as essential for assessing not only digestive health, but your overall health.

"Think of it this way, when you're eating food that is balancing for your doshic picture, digesting, assimilating and eliminating it optimally, that influences every aspect of your physical and mental wellbeing. If you can't make good use of the fuel your providing to your vehicle (your body), then everything is subject to being compromised. When food is not aligned with your doshic picture and not eliminated well, ama (toxins) build up and according to Ayurveda, this is the cause of all dosha imbalances, symptoms, conditions, and diseases. The first job is to eat correctly for YOU, not one-size-fits-all. The second job is to ensure balanced agni so food is digested well. The third job is to guarantee balanced, healthy elimination, daily. This is the primary way to cleanse and detox. If these three are not well established, doshas go out of balance and symptoms arise."

-Veena, Saumya Ayurveda

Your stool can reveal much about your digestive system, dietary habits, and possible dosha imbalances and issues.

Before going any further, what is a perfect poop in Ayurveda?

Ayurveda Stool Analysis: What is a Perfect Poo, Anyways?

Keep in mind, that depending on whether Vata, Pitta or Kapha is your predominant dosha, what is a "regular" bowel movement varies. Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha each have their own qualities.

An ideal stool might possess these characteristics:

  • Complete elimination in the morning, about an hour within waking, and NOT produced after drinking coffee or other stimulants.

  • Brown color

  • Banana shape

  • No mess when wiping

  • No bowel evidence left in the toilet bowl

  • Fairly odorless

  • Looks more or less the same regardless of what has been consumed

Do I Have a Dosha Imbalance or Imbalances?

As you are comprised of all three doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, take a gander at these comprehensive lists of signs and symptoms of dosha imbalances. Does anything look a bit too familiar?

1. Color and Consistency: Key Indicators

Color

The color of your stool can reveal significant insights into your digestive and overall health. Here are common stool colors and their meanings according to Ayurveda:

Ayurveda Stool Analysis: Stool Colors and What They Mean

Brown

Any shade of brown is what you’re aiming for — this combined with the texture of your poop will indicate how healthy your digestive tract and body are.

Yellow

If your poop is yellow or yellow-brown this indicates you have too much fat in your intestines due to malabsorption, an intestinal condition or disease, high Pitta, or improper nutrition.

Red

Red poop means something you ate either had red food coloring in it, you have hemorrhoids, or perhaps bleeding in your digestive system.

Pale, White or Clay-colored

What causes pale stools? Pale-ish, clay-colored stools may be caused by a lack of bile making its way from the liver to the gallbladder, to the intestine. Bile is what colors the stool; a pale, clay-colored stool means no bile is present.

Black

Certain foods (such as licorice), medications, and supplements can cause black poop. However, if your poop is black for more than a few days consult a professional as this could be an indicator of bleeding in your digestive tract. Black stool may be a sign of old blood from the stomach or upper small intestinal irritation. See a doctor straight away.

Very Green

If your poo comes out looking like a bright shade of green, this either means you have diarrhea (and it’s green because it’s coming out of your body too fast and has not fermented properly) or you ate a lot of greens or consumed green food dye.

Pale, Clay-Colored Stools

Palish, clay-colored stools may be caused by a lack of bile making its way from the liver, to the gallbladder to the intestine. Bile is what colors the stool. A pale, clay stool means no bile.

Greasy, Slippery Looking Stool

You know it when you see it. As with clay-colored stools, greasy stool is usually a result of low bile flow from the liver and then the holding tank of bile, the gallbladder. Remember bile is what colors the stool. It's a greenish-yellow fluid that has many functions including emulsifying fats and carrying away waste. If the fats are not broken down, the undigested fat slimes up the stool.

Blood in the Stool

Spots of blood on the toilet tissues or elsewhere, or streaks of blood observed in the stool, if persisting, is a really good reason to see your doctor. Most commonly, fresh blood in the stool is caused by hemorrhoids, and there may be other serious causes. Don't delay, call your doctor today.

Mucus in Stool

New clients report seeing something that looks like mucus in their stool. They describe it as clear or whitish and stringy and clingy, wrapped around the stool. It's possible the villi of the intestinal wall are smashed down by the weight and thickness of mucous. If mucousy stool persists, one should see their doctor.

Mucus in the stool is caused by an imbalance of the intestinal wall. This could be a medical condition, so if it persists, see your doctor. If you see mucus in the stool—which typically looks like a white or clear stringy substance that wraps around the stool—the intestinal villi are likely flattened or bogged down by mucus. Some causes may include: coffee, processed foods, stress which we feel it in our guts, and weak digestion.

Undigested Food in the Stool

New clients frequently report seeing undigested food in their bowel movement. Here's the chain of digestion. Assuming one is eating food that is correct for them, spiced correctly, a key stage in the complicated digestive process begins in the mind.

Alternating Constipation and Diarrhea: Vata and Pitta Imbalances

Are you scratching your head, ready to pull out your hair, wondering what in the world is going on in there? One day loose stool, the next week it might be constipation, or you may experience both in the same week.

I frequently hear from clients that this experience is maddening, and understandably so. Striving to make connections between what they're eating and what's happening with this unpredictable elimination and not being able to make heads nor tails of it. It is a puzzling and frustrating situation, and it requires attention without delay.

Consistency

The ideal stool should be well-formed and easy to pass and leaves no residue upon wiping or in the bowl.

  • Soft, mushy, or watery stools often reflect digestive distress, indicating likely imbalances in Agni and Pitta.

  • Hard, pebble-like stools this could signal dehydration or lack of dietary fiber, in other words, constipation that likely indicates compromised digestive fire (agni), Vata imbalances and possibly long-standing Pitta aggravation.

  • Sluggish and sleepiness after meals: slow digestion, nausea, and/or fatigue after meals can also indicate imbalanced agni, ama, and Kapha imbalances.

Monitor any consistent changes in your stool's appearance and consider consulting with an experienced Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner.

3. Smell: A Telltale Sign

While the smell of your stool might be an uncomfortable topic, it can provide important information about your digestive health. In Ayurveda, particularly foul odors may indicate the presence of toxins (Ama) or poor digestion or other dosha imbalances.

For instance:

  • Vata: People with a predominance of the air and ether elements, or those experiencing an imbalance in Vata dosha tend to have dryness in the colon, making them susceptible to constipation. They may also experience bloating, non-smelly gas, bloat, and discomfort during elimination due to colon and overall internal dryness.

  • Pitta: Those with a predominance of the fire and water elements, often causes excessive heat in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, and specifically the lower stomach and small intestine, leading to symptoms like having frequent bowel movements daily, experiencing an urgent need to go, hyperacidity (GERD, acid reflux, IBS), inflammation, and foul-smelling gas.

  • Kapha: Comprised of earth and water elements, individuals with a predominant Kapha dosha or Kapha imbalance may suffer from sluggish digestion, nausea, and/or fatigue after meals, and they may experience constipation due to sluggish peristaltic action.

Awareness of the scent can lead to better insights into your digestive and overall health.

4. Frequency: How Often Should I Poop?

In Ayurveda, health and an optimal digestive system is associated with regular bowel movements. How many bowel movements is healthy depends on your doshic picture.

  • Vata: A balanced Vata poo, is easily passed once a day, typically in the morning within 2-3 hours of waking.

  • Pitta: A healthy Pitta stool will be passed twice a day, usually in the morning within an hour of waking and not following bowel stimulating coffee, and again after lunch.

  • Kapha: A healthy Kapha stool will be passed once a day (typically in the morning), be brown in color, odorless or possibly sweet, well-formed, and complete.

  • If you find yourself going less often, this signifies constipation or possibly and an Agni imbalance.

  • Conversely, more frequent movements such as urgency, diarrhea, or rapid intestinal transit may indicate a Pitta and agni imbalance.

  • When Kapha is imbalanced, the stool will be sticky, pale brown, or clay-colored (signifying liver congestion), and/or have mucus in it indicating an imbalance in the intestinal wall.

Keep in mind, some people are dual doshic or even tri-doshic so it a combination of doshas will muddy the picture. Tracking your bowel habits and making necessary dietary adjustments, herbal, and Ayurvedic lifestyle adjustments can help restore balance. For instance, for Vata, consider increasing your fiber intake or incorporating warming spices like ginger to support digestion.

Please note: Saumya Ayurveda does not recommend using herbs as if they were over the counter or prescribed pharmaceuticals. An experienced Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner will create you a custom herbal formula, special nasya, and customized Ayurveda plan to support the whole you. Herbs are not Ayurvedic because it comes from India. Nor it is correct for you because it is organic. Herbs become Ayurvedic when used as part your customized Ayurveda plan which is carefully tailored for your constitution. An herb that is balancing to one person for a concern, may be imbalancing to another.

5. Lifestyle Factors Impacting Stool Health

Beyond diet, various lifestyle factors can also affect stool health.

Stress Management

High stress levels can disrupt digestion and lead to irregular or too frequent bowel movements. Activities like yog-asana, guided meditations, and diaphragmatic breathing can help manage stress and enhance digestion.

Hydration

Staying hydrated is vital for maintaining the Ayurvedic perfect poop and health. In general, aim for at least eight 8-ounce glasses of tea temperature water per day.

Food As Medicine

Eat according to your doshic picture and your food becomes medicine. Eat out alignment with your doshas, season, and climate and food can create imbalances and conditions.
