The Window to Your Health: Ayurvedic Eye Analysis Revealed!
Updated: Oct 7
Have you ever thought about what your eyes can tell you about your overall health? In Ayurveda the eyes are considered a mirror to the body’s inner workings, providing valuable insights into one’s physical and emotional well-being. Let's delve into the fascinating world of Ayurvedic eye analysis, known as Netra Pariskha, and discover what secrets your eyes may be hiding. Plus four Ayurvedic eye care tips.
1. The Pupil Puzzle
The size, shape, and responsiveness of your pupils can reveal a lot about your nervous system and mental state. (Vata's domain) In Ayurveda, dilated pupils are associated with excess Pitta (fire energy) in the body, while constricted pupils may indicate a Vata (air energy) imbalance. If your pupils react slowly to changes in light, it could signal a Kapha (earth energy) dominance.
2. The Color Connection
The color of the iris can provide valuable clues about your dosha constitution and potential dosha imbalances. In Ayurveda, blue eyes are linked to a Vata constitution, while brown and hazel eyes are associated with Pitta. People with Kapha dominance often have large, attractive eyes with a whitish sclera.
3. Eyes By Dosha Type: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha
Vata Eyes:
Vata eyes are relatively small consistent with Vata’s subtle nature (Vata: air + ether). They may appear sunken, eyelids may droop and the lashes may be scant. Vata eyes may appear nervous. If Vata is high, the eyes may dart around due to the excess movement of Vata especially if the excess is in the mind and nervous system. The sclera (that's the whitish part of the eye) tends to be muddy grey or dull. The iris tends to be dark, dark brown, grey-brown or black, but may be a less common color as well. Eyebrows are thin and may be irregular.
Pitta Eyes:
Pitta eyes are medium in size and deeply set—a thinker’s or philosophical look to the eyes showing the discerning nature and sharp, penetrating nature of Pitta dosha. (Pitta: water + fire). The eyes may appear intense and lustrous.
The sclera may have red or yellow coloring and the iris tends to be green or hazel. Pitta eyes may be more sensitive to light with a tendency towards near-sightedness, redness and inflammation. The eye lashes are medium and oily, and the eyebrows and eyelashes are balanced.
Kapha Eyes:
Kapha eyes are large, moist and surrounded by enviable long, thick lashes. (Kapha: water + earth) The look of the eyes tends to be a soft, gentle, compassionate gaze. The iris tends to be blue. The sclera is perfectly white, and the eyebrows are thick and tend to join in the middle if left on their own.
4. Red Flags: Bloodshot Eyes
Bloodshot or inflamed eyes are not just a sign of fatigue; they can indicate underlying Pitta issues in the body. In Ayurveda, red eyes are linked to excess Pitta, suggesting inflammation or heat imbalance. Incorporating cooling foods and herbs into your diet may help reduce Pitta dosha. Red, bloodshot eyes are trying to tell us something about the overall state of the doshas.
In Ayurveda, it is necessary to treat the root cause of the dosha imbalance, and not simply mask the symptoms with sclera whitening drops. To clearly see the state of the doshas, schedule a comprehensive assessment and consultation with an experienced Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner.
5. The Window to the Liver: Yellowing of Eyes
Yellow discoloration in the whites of the eyes can be a sign of liver dysfunction or excess Pitta in the body. According to Ayurveda, consuming bitter foods and liver-supporting herbs like turmeric can promote liver health. But what's the root cause? If you are worried about cholesterol levels, experiencing hot flashes, irritability, or a bitter taste in your mouth without explanation, it might be time to show some love to your liver with an Ayurvedic consultation. Remember, your liver carries out more than 500 crucial functions. When's the last time you loved up your liver?
6. Dark Circles and Under-Eye Bags
Dark circles and puffiness under the eyes are common concerns that can be attributed to inadequate sleep, poor circulation, burnout, or kidney or adrenal issues. Removing ama is key to wellbeing. In Ayurveda, using cooling eye packs, drinking plenty of water, and reducing salt intake may help address these aesthetic concerns and improve overall health.
7. Sclera Secrets
The sclera, the white part of the eye, can provide insights into one’s digestive health and ama or toxin substance accumulation. A yellowish tint in the sclera may indicate problems with the liver or gallbladder, while redness could signal inflammation in the body and imbalanced Pitta dosha. Consuming detoxifying herbs and maintaining a healthy diet may support liver function and detoxification.

8. The Sparkle Factor
The vitality and luster of the eyes can reflect one’s vitality and well-being. Dull, lackluster eyes may point to low energy, poor nutrition, or emotional stagnation. In Ayurveda, cultivating a daily eye-care routine that includes eye exercises, eye-friendly foods, and adequate rest can help enhance the sparkle in your eyes.
Ayurvedic Eye Care Tips:
Eye Exercises:
Your eyes are not just windows to your soul; they are also reflections of your overall health and vitality. By incorporating Ayurvedic principles and practices, you can decode the messages hidden in your eyes and take steps to restore balance and harmony within your body. Remember, your eyes say more than words ever could – listen to them, nurture them, and let the wisdom of Ayurveda guide you on a journey to holistic well-being.
If your eyes are trying to tell you something, listen for they are communicating important information about what is happening within you and about the state of your doshas.
2. Nasya: Eyes are fragile and vulnerable. Using nasya as part of your Ayurvedic daily routine can help protect your eyes from excess dosha accumulation.
3. Ayurvedic Foot Massage: Explore Ayurvedic Foot Massage: Gain a Foothold On Your Health. Performing Padabhyanga (foot massage with oil) may support healthy vision.

“I discovered Veena on google and was very impressed by all of her glowing reviews. I purchased the half year Ayurveda package with 7 sessions. I'm completely new to Ayurveda and Veena was very knowledgeable, patient with my questions, warm, and has a great sense of humor.
I looked forward to our sessions and after more than a decade of chronic illness, things started improving with the protocols she guided me through. I feel like a different person in just half a year. The improvements are incredible, and I feel so hopeful and inspired by this experience.
I will continue the protocols I've learned and at our last session, I didn't feel like I would be left on my own. Veena is always an email or phone call away - she is very, very responsive, and helpful.
I am so glad I discovered her, and I encourage anyone for any health issue or concern to book with her and see how your overall wellbeing will improve. Thank you, Veena!”

“Veena has been excellent! My son was struggling with an issue for years. I tried everything I could possibly find on the internet and other alternative treatments when his doctor's suggestions weren't working at all. In desperation, I turned to Veena, and she remedied it in just a week. It was so amazing and such a relief after years of struggle. Now it's been about 2 years, and my son is still doing great! I would definitely recommend Veena to everyone. I'm booking a consultation for my daughter too. Thank you Veena!!”
